Dr. Saad Saad is a successful pediatric surgeon who has completed thousands of operations on his pediatric patients over the course of his profession. As a physician he was constantly working to make the current methods and procedures must more simple and effective. He was always questioning and researching to locate ways to minimize pain and potential risk. To solve a couple of the challenges he found, he patented two new inventions and created several new surgical procedures for pediatric patients. For over 40 years, he completed difficult plastic surgeries for patients inside and outside his community. He helped his community in the United States as well as children and young adults in the Holyland. His work includes a total of twelve Medical Missions. Four of them were in the US and eight of them were in Jerusalem and the West Bank. On these missions he completed free complex surgeries on children who otherwise couldn’t afford treatment.
What Are Catheters?
Medical catheters are tubes that are inserted in the body to help fight ailing conditions or to assist with a surgical procedure. They can be a gateway to surgical instruments, they can drain liquids and gases out of the body, as other things. Some types of catheters can be left in the body for temporary or permanent situations.
Surgeons have to be able to track the catheter and see its exact location to ensure proper placement. The common method of finding the catheter has always been to complete an X-ray. Lots of X-rays can cause too much radiation exposure. An alternate solution is to have an MRI, however this requires relocating the patient and is not the most convenient method. This is what brought Dr. Saad Saad to the idea of creating a device that can assist with finding the catheter without using any other piece of machinery.
About The Invention
Dr. Saad Saad invented a catheter with a built-in integral electromagnetic location identification device. It works by using electromagnetic energy to find the catheter. The magnetic material sits on the tip of the catheter and then there are a couple of wires inside of the catheter. This is so doctors performing the procedure can use an external location tool connected to the catheter to scan and find it. The tool will communicate with the catheter and will light up when the doctor is in the right spot.
The device is actually quite similar to a metal detector. Just imagine the user sweeping the ground until the machine beeps to announce they are hovering over the right spot. The doctor will be sweeping the body externally and the device will light up when they are perpendicular to the catheter’s location.
