Betsy DeVos is Serious About the Quality of Education For All

Written by

Betsy DeVos is the current Secretary of Education for the United States and is serving in the Cabinet of President Donald Trump. There was much controversy over her election, but much of it came from the opposition political party. DeVos is an avid proponent of school choice and school vouchers, and many have said that she will destroy the current public education system with her ideas.

The current public school system educates millions of students, and it would be difficult for anyone to “destroy” it, and in many ways, it does a good job. Like any giant bureaucracy, the public educational system has its flaws, and there are areas that could improve.

There are areas of the country that are left out, such as many rural areas and inner city students. Betsy DeVos has long been involved in innovative programs that have helped in these areas, and that is where school choice and school vouchers can come to the rescue of students who are left out.

DeVos was involved in the publically funded Charter School program in Detroit where the reading scores were dramatically improved as was the graduation rate. Critics were harsh on the program because they called it a fluke, but it is difficult to argue against the facts.

DeVos argues that parents and students need choices that can enhance the conditions under which students can receive a better learning experience. In the current setup, the conditions under which students learn are determined by the zip code in which they live. In the inner cities, for example, many of the schools and conditions are intolerable. The buildings are old and run down, and the materials available are nonexistent.

Having a strong tax base in the suburbs of America is one of the keys to education “success” but if a student lives in and area such as the inner cities where the tax base has left the area, these students are simply out of luck. Offering inner city students more choices gives them a better opportunity.

Our technology is so advanced for many things; it ought to be better utilized for educational purposes too, according to DeVos. Just about every student knows how to operate a smartphone, a tablet, or a laptop. There are many innovative ways that education can be delivered to students electronically as opposed to forcing them to physically attend a classroom setting all of the time.

Knowledge does not always have to be transmitted in a classroom setting in groups. Homeschooling has shown that students overall who have been home schooled have better scores than students going to formal classes. DeVos believes that when parents and students have more available options, the results will be better as far as more students having success. Visit betsydevos.com to know more about Betsy.
