The Michigan based philanthropist and education reform expert Betsy DeVos has recently been appointed to the highest education position in the U.S. with her appointment as the Secretary of Education, but her career and life has taken in much more than this single area of concern and philanthropy. The graduate of Calvin College has always had a concern for the community she lives in and the wider range of U.S. citizens, which I was shocked to see has led to her taking on a number of different roles across a range of subject areas. In a bid to make sure the traditional American values Mrs. DeVos has found the time in her busy schedule to chair the Michigan Republican Party on two separate occasions in a schedule that amazes me with its range of good causes and political meetings.
I first became aware of Betsy DeVos when she was conducting an education reform campaign in Florida that showed me just how impressive her political skills are as she persuaded politicians from different parties to back a school choice program that is now the envy of the nation. In her native Michigan, Mrs. DeVos has done much to support various groups supporting school choice and the flagship Detroit Charter School program that has been proven in recent studies to provide a higher level of education than traditional public schools.
It is difficult for me to express the level of admiration I possess for Mrs. DeVos in terms of her success as a philanthropist and consistent supporter of different good causes. Born in Michigan to a family of famous industrialists, it is not always the path of an heiress to help others, but Betsy DeVos has made a career out of her good works; for her native Michigan she wishes to create a community with every possible chance of success, including the chance to take part in the innovative ArtPrize program that gives local people the chance to vote on the winning pieces each year. Betsy DeVos has also shown her skills in identifying new areas to explore with her work to develop the first aviation based charter school in the U.S. located close to her hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan. My look at the career of Betsy DeVos has also shown her to be a committed Calvinist who has looked to maintain the Christian values she expresses in her own life thorugh her work with the Willow Creek Association and the Acton Institute of Religion and Liberty.
